Acts EP Study Commentaries Epsc Commentary Guy Prentiss Waters 9781783970032 Books
Guy Prentice Waters is a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and author of a number of academic and popular-level books. His first Bible commentary came out last year on Acts in the EP Study Commentary series.He opens up his commentary with an admission: since he began work on this commentary in January 2009, at least four exegetical on Acts have been published. This begs the obvious question: What makes this one any different?
Waters offers three reasons, each of which has merit. He mentions that his commentary is relatively brief. Bear in mind that it stands at around 600 pages. The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series prides itself on being concise, but even its volume on Acts is 447 pages. I recently purchased the Acts volume in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary series, which has 1168 pages. Waters looks at every verse in Acts, but he doesn’t belabor his readers with so much detail that only scholars and the deeply inquisitive would find helpful.
Second, the commentary is aimed at clearly explaining the text for people who want to understand it better for themselves or for explaining it to others. Ultimately this is the purpose of most any commentary, but I think its conciseness makes this easier to see. When it takes a number of pages to explain a verse, it can be difficult to see the message the whole passage is trying to convey.
Third, Waters in unapologetically Reformed. He is, after all, a professor at a reformed seminary and an elder in a Presbyterian church. His Reformed background comes out when he includes quotes from people like John Calvin, but nothing he says feels out of place, as though he were pushing an agenda. He didn’t make a case for infant baptism.
It’s still a hefty volume, but one that any pastor or believer with a desire to learn more about the book of Acts can benefit from.

Even though I am only a lay-leader, bible commentaries hold a special place in my heart. I own a pretty substantial collection of commentaries in both hardback/paperback and also in digital formats (, Logos, and Olive Tree). Therefore, whenever I am given the chance to read through a new commentary, especially one that is from a solid publisher and written by a reformed author, I jump at the chance to read through it and glean as much sound information from it as possible. The EP Study Commentary on Acts by Guy Prentiss Waters is a welcome addition to the EPSC commentary series, and one that will have permanent lasting value to anyone who wants to dive deeper into the Book of Acts.
This specific commentary does an outstanding job of staying focused on the text(s) of Scripture that it is dealing with and avoids getting bogged down into either minute details, or chasing theological rabbit trails, that some commentaries are so prone to do. There is a “Gospel of Mark” feeling one gets as they come to the end of this commentary; quick, concise, and enough details to leave you wanting to continue your study of this wonderful book of the Bible. There is a more than adequate supply of outlines on each chapter, background information, important characters, etc., but it is all handled with such succinctness that you are rarely tempted to skip over anything to get to the “meat” of the commentary for fear of missing anything pertinent that Mr. Waters would like to share with you.
Also, another thing that comes across quite clearly in this commentary is Mr. Water’s pastoral heart. There is tenderness in his writing style that oozes with a heartfelt desire for his readers that some commentaries written by theological teachers struggle to get across. One of the ways we see Mr. Water’s pastoral heart is in the Application section at the end of each chapter. There is a deep desire to not only rightly handle the Word, but also to show readers how to apply it in their everyday lives. That was such a refreshing thing to come upon in this commentary on Acts by Dr. Waters.
The EP Study Commentary on Acts by Dr. Guy Prentiss Waters is a wonderful addition to the extensive offerings on the book of Acts. It is concise, yet thorough, and has a great deal to offer Christians on the history of the early church and how the Spirit of God worked in and through the Apostles. I highly recommend this commentary!

Anyone can tell you we are in no short supply of commentaries on every book of the bible, including ACTS. So why read this one? What makes this 600 page book so different than the rest? Simple really. As we grow in our relationship with Christ we are, hopefully, seeking to understand Him more, build better relationships and come to a deeper understanding of our own spirituality and how God has worked in the lives of others, especially those He called to write the gospel messages.
Guy does a wonderful job bringing the spiritual road of Luke to life in a way that the common person can understand and delight in. Guys application is vivid, thought provoking and applicable to us today as it was when Luke preached. It amazes me every time at how what was happening then in our church's is still happening now, but how we are called to handle has not changed. As we walk through each chapter of Luke, we gain more insight into how the Holy Spirit works in our lives and in each other, the church's history, and Paul's mission journeys.
The book is wrote from a Christian perspective. That the scriptures are the living, breathing, word of God. The author dives into background information, purpose of the writings, estimated date of writings and how it is relevant to our lives today.
